| Car Seats Explained |
| |
| Group 0 Car Seats ~ |
| These seats are for newborn babies, up to around a year (this is also dependent on weight). These Group 0 car seats can be removed and attached to a buggy chassis, this feature enables your baby to keep sleeping.
All these Group 0 car seats are rearward facing, facing the back seat and obviously facing in the opposite direction to travel. They cannot be fitted in the front seat if you have an airbag, however it is statistically safer to out them in the back seat rather than the front.
Many of these Group 0 car seats are fitted by weaving the car seat belt through special guides on the seat, however some now have bases which remain in the car. The base is fitted using the car seat belt but only once and then the Group 0 car seat can be simply clipped onto the base and also removed easily. In addition, some bases have an extra Isofix option for even easier fitting (not using the seat belts but the Isolfix fittings), see below for Isofix description. |
|
| |
| |
| Group 1 Car Seats ~ |
| From around 9 months (or when they outgrow a Group 0 seat) up to about 3 years. Most likely around a year old your child will be awake more of the day, toddling around and very aware of the real world. They will have good upper body strength and will absolutely love facing forward and being able to look out of the window.
Again various seats have their own features, but mostly the belt weaves through the back of the chair and is pulled very tight with a belt tensioner. Isofix is also available on some of these seats. These seats are left in the car and you lift your child in and out of them and into your pushchair buggy rather than attaching the car seat to the chassis. |
|
| |
| |
| Group 2 Car Seats ~ |
| The last full seat you'll buy. From 3 up to 12. These seats no longer have their own harness systems, but rather simply guide the car's own belts through the seat so that the belt is securing your child at the correct shoulder and waste heights. Obviously the cars seat belts are designed for adults so this Group 2 seat forces the car seats belts to the correct shape for a much smaller person.
For example Group 2 car seats force the car seat belt to come out level with your child's shoulder rather than coming down from high above your child's shoulder. These seats also offer a great deal of sideways support.
Some of these seats can be converted into the booster seat by simply removing the back part. |
|
| |
| |
| Booster Seats ~ Or Group 3 seat |
| It is now the law of course that your child has a booster seat up until the age of 12 or until they are 135cm (4ft 5in) tall. Most children reach 135cm around the age of nine. If you child is travelling in someone elses car they are still required to use a booster seat.
Some Group 2 seats can be converted into booster seats saving you a chunk of cash. |

| Isofix explained in a nut shell ~ |
Basically (deep breath)...
...in more expensive cars, there are little, rigid, metal loops that are down the crack of the rear seats. These two loops are a standard shape and distance apart and are actually welded directly to the car's chassis. These simple metal loops are your car's ISOFIX fitting. An "ISOFIX CAR SEAT" can then hook itself directly into these loops and effectively become as secure as the car's own seats.
So the word ISOFIX describes these standardised metal loops available on some more expensive cars (check your car's manual). And so an ISOFIX CAR SEAT is one that has it's own way of attaching to these ISOFIX metal loops. |
